Games such as Discworld Noir and Under A Killing Moon do it really well and it's kinda sad that so few games in the genre exist. The Silver Earring is another of these games which does not rely upon "use item X with item Y" puzzles but rather on cross-examination, investigation and tying elements together. It doesn't do it as well as the above-mentioned examples, however. In most areas the games is quite adequate but never more than that, and in some areas the game is rather poor. Here's a list of PRO's and CON's:PRO- The game keeps track of everything you collect & where you collected it in list-form. Same with dialogs and letters and other evidence. Very tidy and handy- the Quiz between chapters is pretty well done and forces you to think for yourself- the backdrops are pretty well designed- the game has a nice attention to detail in true Sherlock Holmes fashion- the murder mystery is actually quite engagingCON- the dialog is very hit & miss - some parts are simply poorly written while others are quite convincing. The voice actors are mostly average at best- the characters you meet are not that interesting or simply break immersion by being unbelievable (the drunks outside for example)- the interface is a bit of a chore to say the least.- sometimes the game will let you "use" an object through dialog and sometimes you got to drag it onto a person - the game is very inconcistent like that. Since you pick up loads of items, this can be very tedious if you get stuck- the game heavily relies on linearity - you need to find every single clue before it will continue which can be infuriating. A walkthrough is a must if you want to enjoy the game!- the music is not very appropriate a lot of the time and harms the immersion.- the Quiz requires every single answer to be correct and in two instances, I found that the question was confusing so I had to cheat.- Holmes is even more of a jerk than the books make him out to be - he's plainly rude half the time.Do I recommend this game? Just about but barely and only with a walkthrough. If you love murder mysteries, this is still a nice game if you can forgive its flaws ... .. Honestly, the graphical errors and such are things that I expected when playing an old games. There were many times where strange overlaps would occur and break the game, so I had to reopen-- even after adjusting the resolution and other display settings as seen recommended in forums. If you play this, for the love of god, save often.I should clarify I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes in literature. Some of the games definitely deliver in this category. My favorite remains Crimes & Punishments, which is both intuitive in control and camera as well as plot development, but still challenging and intriguing. I've trudged through some of the older games, but this one is probably one of my least favorite.Pros: Still the pompous Sherlock you'll find in all games. However, this lacks the charm of his absolute lack of self-preservation that other games will happily highlight for you-- imo, one of his bigger charms. Banter between him and the cops is troll as always. Overlooking random visual glitches, the cutscenes aren't so bad for a 14 year old game.Cons: Navigation is a headache, a trait of old clickers, unfortunately. A map is provided for some locations, but there is no indication of your own position in it, and the whirling camera angles make it pretty hard to deduce on your own. There is a lot of being tugged around in many directions, without a lot of evidence that ever begins to lean somewhere. A lot of useless filler information. Some of the puzzles genuinely made me curse aloud. Not because of difficulty, but because of genuine absurdity. If the overwhelming portion of players for your game admit to relying on a walkthrough, the issue is with the design, not the player. Puzzles should provide some level of intuitive hint or structure. Simple actions are made complicated due to literally no explanation or reason. I spent three minutes trying to stick something in g*ddamn water because it is not expressed to you that you need to heat the water first. I would never guess I have to heat water up to put soap in it. WHY, lmao? Progression makes no sense and involves a lot of redundant pathing. You can literally be the only person navigating a location, but after finding one clue, all the sudden like 6 more objects that are very visually obvious appear, rather than having existing objects gain meaning. What? How does that make sense at all? Who is walking around dropping things while you sift through papers? Minor complaint that visuals will de-sync, and certain voice actors are 3x louder than others. All-in-all, there's definitely a better detective-style game out there.. Good adventure with very oldschool controls and some graphical bugs and glitches. Enjoyable, but outdated.. I like all the games in this series. Clumsy game mechanics, illogical puzzles, and a story with so many names and motives that by the end I didn't care who the killer was (especially when the reveal was included in a finishing cutscene of over 15 minutes in length).. If you get easily salty cos of bad game mechanics then you shouldn't play this game. In general I'd suggest everyone to play this game with a walkthrough of it, so everytime when you get stuck you can check the walkthrough and progress further in the game. I play a lot of detective games and I got stuck a lot of times in this game, cos sometimes you literally have to find a bunch of hair somewhere which you can super easily overlook. And if you reach the point in the game where you have to sneak past a guard and the guard dog: SAVE IMMEDIATELY! Because if you fail to sneak past them, the investigation is over and you have to re-load a save. Since this game does not have autosave, it has happened to me that I forgot to save for quite a while, got caught by the guards and lost progress of almost an hour. And if you reach the point where you're in a forest which is kind of like a maze: SAVE IMMEDIATELY AGAIN! Because the same thing will happen again if you fail this mission. Some of the puzzles did not make any sense to me, even with the help of the walkthrough. And the story can get super confusing at one point cos it's connected with so many side stories and I gotta admit that I lost track of what was happening halfway through the game. Still played it until the end cos I wanted to know who the murderer was. All in all the game wasn't bad. Some mechanics were weird, some puzzles didn't make sense and the story is confusing but it still was an experience and fun to play through it. I'd say buy it when it's on sale so you won't regret spending the whole amount on it (let's be honest, the price is too high). You can finish it within 8-10 hours.. While miles better than their first Sherlock Holmes game, this second outing is still not good. The plot's a bit of a jumble, and the items you have to find far too hidden. There's also no first person option, so most of the game is spent watching Holmes walk slowly around the large areas.Frogwares gets better though! In fact every game after this is well worth playing, even the silly Hound of the Baskervilles.. Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring was overall a very enjoyable puzzle adventure game. The game begins with the death of a wealthy businessman and leaves you to investigate the scene. The game will then take you to multiple connected locations as you attempts to piece together the murder and uncover the assassin and the motive for the murder. The game is set over 5 days of investigations and each day will have you visit a location and search it for clues and solve one or two puzzles with ranging difficulties (some puzzles were quite hard and confusing), at the end of each day you will summarise your findings in a quiz, which for me was probably the hardest part of the game. I found the story to be quite engaging and interesting overall with a good range of characters and locations and was well suited to a Sherlock story. Overall 'Sherlock Holmes: The Silver Earring' was a good solid adventure game which presented a well written story and some good puzzles, taking around 9 - 10 hours to complete and with a very conclusive ending I would highly recommend it for adventure game enthusiasts. 8.5\/10. The game is old and the navigation of the characters are a pain sometimes, but this excellent story is worth all the troubles. Bravo Frogwares,
